New Wii Sighting
Tired of the bland, white Wii? Get ready for a change, as long as you live in Japan. Although the announcement of a black Wii is old news (well, a couple weeks old), sightings of the black Wii have just now broken onto the scene.
Only the packaging image is available from Nintendo; we will let you know as soon as an actual photo of the console or controllers becomes available, beyond the boiler plate Photoshop image floating around.
As it currently stands, the black Wii is only available in Japan. Color-conscious gamers Stateside will probably ask for the black model, too. We should see it eventually.
Release date for the black Wii is just a couple weeks away. Nintendo has promised that they will be available beginning on August 1. In addition to the sable-colored console, Nintendo will offer matching peripherals. The black remote, nunchuk, and classic controller will all be ready for launch on August 1st. No word on the Wii Fit.
We’re not sure how the color option will affect sales. Some reviewers call the new look “more mature,” but it is hard to see how a more mature look will compel current Wii owners to stop, drop, and buy. It is more possible that the black Wii will simply be an added option for almost buyers.
Why stop at a bichromatic Wii? Some gamers want more color. When Nintendo Wii first released the new motion-sensitive gaming system three years ago (2006), they wowed gamers with the rainbow of colors that the Wii could feature—red, lime green, silver, and black. Three years later, two colors are all we have. It could be that future generations of the Wii may boast the vast chromaticity that they suggested.
